A Mad Max film has 10 Oscar nominations. God save King George.

That’s awesome! It deserves to win. Everything about it is masterful, from the set design and costuming, to the acting, to the sound score, to the editing. It was an absolutely fantastic bit of science fiction.

No kidding. You don’t even have to be a fan of cars, or post-apocalyptic fiction, or even science fiction. It’s just a brilliantly told story. The pacing and emotion. It’s all there.

Man, I’m really starting to wonder if something is wrong with me. I saw this movie in theaters and thought it was shitty. I thought it was boring and had terrible pacing. Great visuals though.

Really!? I thought pacing and editing was at its best here. Charlize loses her homeland, throws down her arm, trudges onto a dune, falls down crying aaaaand CUT. Any emotional reaction shot in this picture was refreshingly brief. Wish I could think of some more offhand.
George Miller has done two things well in Mad Max and the Road Warrior:
1) He lets -YOU- have a reaction when something shocking or emotional happens by not dwelling on characters faces or reactions.
2) In the case of the Road Warrior at least (and I know we’re not talking about that but it’s the same guy, same style), -YOU- are put in the place of Max—you get to look through his binoculars from afar and witness the scene as he did: a loner, desperate, isolated.

Might win Cinematography, Costume Design, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects. The Martian will probably steal Production Design from it. I would be very surprised if it won best picture or best director, only because I don’t think the Oscar’s have the balls to do it.

Oh, I know. I’m not expecting a win. It’s not depressing or edgy enough. But to me, the nomination is a win. It’s proof that even the stuffiest, snootiest, most intellectual critics can still enjoy a good action movie if it’s well crafted. It means that you can fill your story with utter hilarity and ridiculousness, and as long as you slather it on deeper themes, great pacing, and brilliant acting, you can still make a fantastic movie.

They definitely did a great job realizing the “world” they were creating. Maybe my expectations were just too high going in or something.

I agree. It has just the right blend of edgy and depressing to satisfy the Academy.
